Ipsa Biana: The Oromo Community of Yorkshire @ the 2014 World Refugee Day in Leeds

On 28th June 2014, the Oromo Community of Yorkshire participated in the Refugee Week activities organized by Leeds City Council (UK). Members of the Oromo Community of Yorkshire were wearing Oromo cultural clothes, and also roasted and served Oromia coffee. The delicious Oromia coffee was enjoyed and appreciated by many guests who were at the stand. Among the guests was Rt Hon Hilary Benn Shadow, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
Mr. Benn visited Ethiopia when he was the UK Secretary of State for International Development in January 2006. During his visit he told the then Ethiopian Prime Minister the following:
I call upon all Oromos of all walks of life to work hard to expose the injustice inflicted upon the Oromo people in Ethiopia by the notorious TPLF regime.

“The UK is seriously concerned about governance, human rights and the detention of, and serious charges faced by, opposition, media and members of civil society. Concerns have been raised with me about the ongoing clashes involving students and security forces in schools and colleges across the country, and there should be an independent investigation into the alleged recent human rights violations in Oromiya.
“There needs to be a prompt, fair and open judicial process for those currently detained. I also hope that international jurists will be able to observe the trial, and that an independent international organisation will be able to inspect all the places where people are currently being detained.
“The only way forward for Ethiopia is through inclusive political dialogue, and the continuation of the democratization process which we are ready to support.”
Dear peace-loving people of the world, the TPLF-led Ethiopian regime has continued to mercilessly arrest, imprison, kill and uproot Oromo farmers, students and civilians from their land, calling it a “democratization and development process.”I call upon all Oromos of all walks of life to work hard to expose the injustice inflicted upon the Oromo people in Ethiopia by the notorious TPLF regime.
